"My Dad is Rich"

By Tavia Rzasa

The song “My Dad is Rich” by Draco and the Malfoys adds just another title to their list of many songs. In 2004, Brian Ross and Bradley Mehlenbacher of Woonsocket, R.I., formed their musical project Draco and the Malfoys. Five years later and the band has released two CDs and one EP including Draco and the Malfoys (2005), Party Like You’re Evil (2007), and their EP Family (2007).

Half-brothers Ross and Mehlenbacher write songs based on events that occur in J.K. Rowling’s hit series Harry Potter through Malfoy’s point of view. To share these songs about the Harry Potter series, Draco and the Malfoys perform around the U.S. and Canada at libraries, educational institutions, book stores and clubs.

At first listen, most may think that “My Dad is Rich” is a song meant for children, as Ross and Mehlenbacher’s voices seem very childish. After listening to the lyrics, however, it seems this is not a childish song at all, as it can be offensive to some people. According to Wikipedia, Ross has even admitted to little kids getting upset and yelling at them for their lyrics. The song is labeled under the category of Wizard Rock/Indie Rock, but it has a very humorous feel to it.

Greene: Credible Resource?

Greene: Credible Resource?
By Tavia Rzasa

The questions stands: is Robert William Wright Greene a real journalism teacher, and is he truly a credible source?

Greene claims the answer to this question is yes, but some may beg to differ. According to his Web site, www.soylentgreene.us, he worked as the communications director for a place called the Institute for Humanist Studies. Thorough research was done, and the conclusion is that this is true. The Institute for Humanist Studies has a Web site and Greene’s photo is on it, along with descriptions of what he did.

It is pretty well known that Greene is a teacher at Nashua High South, as his Web site claims. Evidence comes from a Nashua Telegraph article published a little less than a year ago. The article titled “Nashua South goes back to business as usual” includes quotes from Greene. In the article, Greene stated that he is thrilled to be back, and glad he is not on the picket line. Assuming the Nashua Telegraph is credible, it can be rightfully stated that Greene is a high school journalism teacher.

Greene’s Web site also states that he will be getting married to his fiancée, Brenda, this coming summer. The couple even has their own Web site. Though it cannot be said that this is a completely credible Web site, it has many pictures of Greene and his “fiancée” on it. Looking through the Web site, it can easily be said that a lot of time was put into it. There is even a day to day blog. Who would spend that much time on something that doesn’t even exist?

Greene’s online biography also states that worked at The Hippo, the largest arts-and-entertainment newspaper in New Hampshire, as its editor during its expansion to Concord and Nashua. According to Greene’s blog, he worked there from November 2005-May 2006. Background research was done on articles by Greene in The Hippo. One was found dated 2005 at the bottom, and seems to be a credible article. After all, The Hippo is New Hampshire’s number one newspaper for arts and entertainment.

Some might say Greene is a credible source, and some may say he is not. Maybe someday, this question will be answered to its full extent.
